Writing and feedback that moves your project forward

Whether it's a manuscript or website copy, I give you clear, actionable insight into what's working and what needs to change.

Journal and Coffee
Full Manuscript

Developmental Editing

The big-picture read your manuscript needs before anything else. I evaluate structure, pacing, character arcs, thematic coherence, point-of-view consistency, and narrative momentum — the layers beneath the prose that determine whether a story works.

This is not line editing or copyediting. I'm not fixing sentences; I'm telling you how the story holds together at the chapter, act, and manuscript level.

What You Receive
  • Detailed editorial letter (typically 3–8 pages)
  • Inline comments throughout the manuscript
  • Summary of strengths and priority revisions
  • Optional follow-up email Q&A

What I look for

🏗️

Structure & Plot

Does the story begin in the right place? Are acts balanced? Do subplots earn their space?

⏱️

Pacing

Where does the story drag? Where does it rush? What's creating friction — and is the friction intentional?

🎭

Character Arcs

Are your characters changing? Do their internal arcs connect to the external plot? Do their decisions feel earned?

🌊

Emotional Resonance

Does the reader feel what they should feel? Are the story's emotional beats landing where they're placed?

🔗

Themes & Clarity

Does the story know what it's about? Are the central ideas reinforced or undermined by plot and character choices?

Good for:

  • Testing a new opening chapter before committing to a full draft
  • Getting a second read on a pivotal scene or turning point
  • Finding out if your inciting incident is landing the way you intend
  • Diagnosing a specific problem (pacing, POV, tension) in a section
  • Web serial writers looking for feedback between chapters or arcs
Submission guidelines Please submit up to 5,000 words per critique. Indicate what you most want feedback on — I'll focus there first.
Chapter or Section

Story Critique

Focused developmental feedback on a single chapter or short section. Lighter in scope than a full manuscript edit, but no less rigorous — I bring the same analytical eye to a single chapter as I do to a full novel.

Faster turnaround. Targeted feedback. The right tool when you need a specific read, not a full manuscript review.

What You Receive
  • Critique memo (focused feedback, 1–3 pages)
  • Inline comments throughout the submitted pages
  • Priority list of things to address in revision

Common Questions

Do you do line editing or copyediting?

No. I focus exclusively on developmental work — structure, pacing, arcs, and clarity at the story level. Once you've revised based on developmental feedback, a separate line or copyeditor is the right next step.

What genres do you work with?

Typically speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, horror) and literary fiction, but I'm open to other genres including romance mystery and non-fiction.

How long does a developmental edit take?

This depends on the project but can be discussed upon consultation. Generally, a full manuscript developmental edit takes 4–8 weeks, while a chapter critique can usually be delivered in 1–2 weeks. For newsletter and website copy services, turnaround times vary based on the scope and frequency of content needed. A popular option is a monthly newletter in which A date will be selected and regular content will appear at that interval.

Do you work with unpublished writers or non established brands?

Yes. Most of my clients are working on their first or second novel. Developmental editing is especially valuable early in a writer's development — it builds pattern recognition and craft knowledge that carries across every project. For brands, I have experience with newletters for many different areas of industry and there's really nothing I won't consider working on.
